Extraction of oil from palm kernels is generally separate from palm oil extraction. The two feedstocks (palm fruit / palm kernels) provide different qualities of oil. The output of seed extraction is crude palm kernel oil (CPKO). This is dark yellow in colour with a small percentage of solids. This palm kernel oil solidifies in cold climates and becomes extremely difficult to handle in such conditions. In order to make the CPKO easy to process (and not solidify al lower ambient temperatures), it is refined in the palm kernel oil refinery.
The further stages in this process comprise grinding the kernels into small particles, heating and extracting the remaining oil using an oilseed expeller or solvent, such as hexane.
The oil then requires clarification e.g. in a filter press.
Palm oil extraction is a well-established industry, with large numbers of international manufacturers involved.
Product Highlights
The OPTIMASS 1400 coriolis mass flowmeter is the ideal instrument for use before and after the clarifier, because of the twin tube design and hydraulically optimized flow splitter, which gives a low pressure loss. It offers a best-in-class price/performance ratio, giving high accuracy mass, density and volume flow measurement (±0.15% of MV). It also monitors the product temperature, and can be fitted with a heating jacket, further insulation or purge ports.
