Preheated fatty acid feed is made to flow through a series of reaction chambers.<br \/>\nEach reaction chamber is heated at the bottom, typically by superheated steam, which is injected into the feed in each chamber through a sparger. The steam passes through, travelling on to the barometric condenser: the non-condensable gases are removed by a vacuum pump. The residue leaving the base of the last reaction chamber is cooled. In all these process steps measurements of pressure and temperature are crucial. One disadvantage of steam distillation of fatty acids is the formation of emulsions in the last stage of condensation, where a water spray is used. The calcium and magnesium salts typically present in the water spray react with the fatty acids forming soaps.<br \/>\nTo recover the fatty acids, the soap is acidified and redistilled if ><p>The OPTIBAR PM 5060 is a pressure transmitter for process pressure and level measurement, operating in gases, liquids and steam. It can be used for liquid level measurement in open tanks and \u2013 as a dual version for electronic differential pressure measurement \u2013 also in closed vessels. Depending on the measuring cell, the pressure transmitter can operate over a wide process pressure range from 100 mbar \/ 1.45 psi up to 1000 bar \/ 14500 psi. Also it can be used in operational temperatures up to +105\u00b0C \/ +221\u00b0F, special versions even allow for up to +200\u00b0C \/ +392\u00b0F without separate diaphragm seals. In this distillation the high temperatures require the diaphragm seal systems of the OPTIBAR DS series. The latest seal filling and laser welding technologies guarantee best in class performance under vacuum conditions and at elevated process temperatures (up to 400\u00b0C).
