Los \u00e9steres met\u00edlicos derivados del aceite de palma (PME) son similares a los FAME.<br \/>\nEsta reacci\u00f3n puede ser una cat\u00e1lisis \u00e1cida o b\u00e1sica dependiendo de las propiedades de las materias primas. La glicerina (alcohol trivalente) se convierte en metanol. La glicerina y los FAME se forman mediante una reacci\u00f3n en la cual, utilizando grasas naturales, se obtiene una mezcla de diferentes \u00e9steres met\u00edlicos de \u00e1cidos grasos con un n\u00famero par de \u00e1tomos de carbono, ya que los triglic\u00e9ridos naturales normalmente contienen algunos residuos de \u00e1cidos grasos diferentes.<br \/>\nEn t\u00e9rminos generales, la producci\u00f3n de biodi\u00e9sel es el proceso por el que se obtiene biocombustible, biodi\u00e9sel, mediante las reacciones qu\u00edmicas de transesterificaci\u00f3n y esterificaci\u00f3n. Este proceso involucra grasas vegetales (o animales) y aceites que reaccionan con alcoholes de cadena corta (t\u00edpicamente metanol o etanol). Los alcoholes empleados deben ser de bajo peso molecular. El etanol se emplea a menudo porque es econ\u00f3mico, sin embargo, grandes conversiones en biodi\u00e9sel pueden obtenerse utilizando metanol.<br \/>\nSi bien la transesterificaci\u00f3n puede ser una reacci\u00f3n de cat\u00e1lisis \u00e1cida o b\u00e1sica, esta \u00faltima es m\u00e1s com\u00fan. Este m\u00e9todo tiene tiempos de reacci\u00f3n y costes del catalizador inferiores respecto a la cat\u00e1lisis \u00e1cida. Esta especificidad no es qu\u00edmicamente posible, as\u00ed este m\u00e9todo enzim\u00e1tico puede emplearse para la producci\u00f3n de suced\u00e1neos de la manteca de cacao, margarina, manteca y
